went to IMH, thanx to Vital's learning journey.. there were a few places to visit, but most of them were full already.. thought a visit to IMH would be good for my personal and future development. At first we were given an hour's talk by the HR director, he talked abt how they set up, wad kind of illness the patients have here, how long they take to recover, how society's stigma affect their development on patients and their institute. it was an insightful hr, learnt abt lots of stuff that were not revealed to the media.

Basically, patients were divided into 2 "categories". severe cases had to be warded, while non-severe ones can have check ups in the out-patient clinic. We didn't get to visit the wards, for obvious reasons. We did get to walk around the places where the patients go on a daily basis though. To help them recover, patients had quite a few kinds of therapy. There was gardening therapy, art and class lessons and stuff.. patients were taught to sew, paint, mould and design. All these helps them to form a sense of responsibility and also, to learn a new skill. Because of their illness, they might have lost some very basic skills that they once had. These kinds of lessons thus helps them to regain their confidence, and also for their own personal development. IMH also have this group of people, called the Job Club where they source for prospect employees, to employ those patients whose conditions have stabilised . Although the positions are very limited (basically only in FnB and cleaning), a lot of companies have opened their doors to employ them. Which is a very big step for these patients who would be out-casted by the society. The first 2 months of their employment requires very intense follow up by the patient's therapist and job club admin personnel. Most of them would be in very low self esteem, and much moral support and encouragement is needed.

Of course, there are small initiatives taken by IMH to prepare them for the society outside. There are some retail outlets, FnB outlets in IMH and their very own library, are run by patients whose conditions are under controlled. If they perform well, and think that they can go out for bigger challenges, then they will be deployed to shopping malls and elsewhere to work.

How many of us know what goes on behind all these people's work? Those who teach them gardening, the assistants who teach them how to paint, mould, sew, stitch; how amazing are their responsibilities, how noble are these silent heros.
