Work Safety Environment / Basic Medical Benefit

My son was working at Toast Box Great World City (14th May 2009) when he accidentally cut his thumb at approximately 11.15am with a sharp knife. The cut was surprisingly deep and started to bleed non-stop. He then took a cab on his own to the nearest hospital to seek professional help. The doctor then gave him a 10 days MC. He paid for the cab fare, consultation fee, medical fee and 3 follow up payments on his own.
As he is a part time worker at the company, he is not entitled to any benefits. But since he injured himself due to work and at work, isn’t he supposed to be allowed the basic benefits? As he is being paid by the hours he worked, 10 days of MC means no income at all for him.
Let’s not talk about privileges. But the basic simple medical benefits should be allowed for an employee who is working for the company and who have injured due to work. As his job scope (and other part timers included ) is surrounded by hot water, sharp objects and other hazardous objects, there should be basic medical benefits or at least workman compensation for any employees; be it part time or full time. It has always been this way that part timers don’t have any benefits. Aren’t part timers part of the company? Aren’t part timers helping the company to earn money thus making the company prosper? Aren’t part timers human?

There has all along been this unspoken rule that no benefits and privileges for part timers. But I also know the pressure that all employees face. It has always been the case to schedule part timers during the peak and busiest periods of the operating hours so that the company can serve its mission to provide food and service to customers, making them satisfied. The part timers are the key players to the company’s success although they don’t have much working hours and huge responsibility to the company. I am very sure that almost all F&B outlets survive base on part timers especially during the peak period. Given their service to the company, how can their safety be neglected? How can they be treated so much differently from the full timers? How can they be no different from outsiders? I’m speaking on behalf of all part timers and parents of part timers who have been through injuries during work and because of work but have been neglected because they are only part timers.

All in all, I just want to justify these burning questions.
1) Why aren’t part timers entitled for medical benefits
2) In this situation whereby the employee has injured due to work and at work, should he be compensated? If yes, who should he go to? If no, why?

I really hope to get a satisfactory answer for the above questions so that I can put my mind at ease when my other children are working part time out there.

Thank you very much for your time and sorry for any inconvenience caused.

may all part timers UNITE!!!
